Simon, you have explained themes far better than any English teacher or professor I've ever had. I've had quite a few with my focus on literature.
Thank you.
Now I can think of themes as a subconscious (for the reader) guidepost. The theme may only become apparent to them at the end of the book, but they'll have a comfort throughout with how I address the various plot threads and characters, setting and dialog.
I recently found Substack. Your articles on serialization are a godsend. I'd tried it previously in a monthly steampunk subscription box I sent out. The responsibility of finding a published steampunk book, reading it, sourcing gifts, marketing the box, packing, and shipping, on top of writing each chapter became entirely too much.
I want to get back to my story about my character, Dapper Sasquatch. I have 12 chapters completed. Substack looks like the way to go. Now I have to think of a name for my newsletter and get a publication schedule set.
So, thank you. I appreciate your articles on serialization and writing. I'm definitely subscribing so I can get all of the back chapters of Tales from the Triverse and future works.
Hello, Stephanie! Thanks for that very kind comment, I'm glad to be helpful. As I mention in the post, shifting from a focus on plot to a focus on theme definitely improved what I was writing and also made it more satisfying to do the actual writing.
Good luck with your writing - do let me know how you get on and if you start your own newsletter!
Brilliant, thank you.
Thank you for this, fantastic idea to have a themes list available at all times while writing. I'm going to start doing that right now!
I hope it helps! It's definitely made writing easier for me, at the same time as (I think) making my writing better.
