There’s a lot of bad writing advice. But every so often you stumble upon a little nugget that clicks with your brain and makes writing that little bit easier, or more interesting.
You lot are always full of excellent insights, so let’s make this comment thread a big ol’ list of excellent tips that we can all peruse and file away for later.
Here’s one from me: TV, comics and novel writer J. Michael Straczynski, in his autobiography Becoming Superman as well as his writing manual Becoming a Writer, Staying a Writer, emphasises never becoming too comfortable. I’m someone who loves being comfy, so this is something of a constant struggle. In my writing, I do try to channel that advice: always shifting up genre, or structure, or character expectations. Never settling or doing the obvious. Embracing the challenge.
Right, I’ll see you down in the comments. What’s the most useful writing advice you’ve encountered?
Write as often as you can, even if it's a load of bollocks. Writing is a muscle, and you need to flex it.
Write for quantity.
Edit for quality.
